Was Jackie Robinson the first African American in Major League Sports?
Was Jackie Robinson the first African American athlete to play in any Major League?
I know he was the first in MLB. But in all of the Major Leagues was he the one who opened the doors for black athletes?
No. Of the four major sports, pro football was the first to integrate in 1920. Baseball was second with Jackie Robinson starting the influx of black players. The NBA integrated in 1950 and the NHL took until 1958 to welcome its first black hockey player.
Also, Jackie Robinson was not the first black man in professional baseball either. That distiction belongs to Moses Fleetwood Walker, who played catcher for Toledo of the American Association in 1884. It would, however, be 63 years before Jackie Robinson kicked down the doors for good.
